This advanced course is for Masters, engineer officers, or anyone with immediate responsibility for the care and use of fuels or fuel systems subject to the IGF Code.

It aims to provide the necessary knowledge, understanding and proficiency to manage safe and effective operation of fuel systems of ships powered by fuels covered within the IGF Code, whereas those who complete the basic course are responsible for designated safety duties associated with the care, use, or emergency response to the fuel on board ships subject to the IGF code.

What you'll learn

Upon completion of this course you should be able to:

  • Understand the chemical and thermo-physical properties of fuels covered by the IGF Code and control measures associated with their use as fuel.
  • Describe the physical properties and characteristics of fuels and explore precautions to be taken to manage hazards. Explain use of gas detection instruments associated with specific gases and correct calibration. Explain the control measures required to manage hazards.
  • Safely operate and manage the fuel systems in compliance with legislative requirements.
  • Describe fuel storage systems.Outline the general arrangement of fuel systems for different propulsion plants, identifying the key components, their purpose and operation. Explain the operational characteristics of fuel system components. Outline the application of the IGF Code, MARPOL, and other relevant legislation with respect to the handling of low flashpoint fuels and the dangers of non-compliance.
  • Safely manage the fuel processes and practices on vessels using fuels covered within the IGF Code.
  • Describe fuel transfer and management process. Organise, manage and monitor bunkering process of low flash point fuels.
  • Manage health, safety, emergency response and environmental precautions in working on vessels using fuels covered within the IGF Code.
  • Use appropriate safety equipment and protective devices. Describe safe working practices and procedures in accordance with legislation and industry guidelines. Describe typical shipboard procedures and measures to deal with leakages and fires.

Pre-requisites

Delegates should hold a Certificate of Proficiency for Basic Training on Ships Subject to the IGF Code, or be STCW management-level certificated officers, or pre-qualified through basic gas tanker safety endorsement/certification.
