The lecture portion of the course will be completed online, with an approved instructor. Upon completion of the course you will have 6 months, from the completion of the knowledge-based portion of the training, to complete the assessments, simulations, lab exercises and final exam(s) at Mid-Atlantic Maritime Academy. This portion must be done in person.

Any applicant who has successfully completed your Advanced Cargo Handling and Stowage (Management Level) (MIDATL-13) course will satisfy:
- The Advanced Cargo Handling & Stowage standards of competence required by 46 CFR 11.305(a)(2), 11.307(a)(2), 11.311(a)(2), 11.313(a)(2) and 11.315(a)(2); AND
- The Advanced Cargo Handling & Stowage standards of competence required by STCW Code Section A-II/2 and Tables A-II/2, as amended 2010, meeting the National Assessment Guidelines from NVICs 10-14(Ch-2), 11-14(Ch-2), and 03-18 Tasks 11.1.A, 11.1.B, 11.4.A, 11.4.B, 11.4.C, 11.4.D, 11.5.A, 11.5.B, 11.5.C, 11.5.D, 11.5.E, 11.6.A, 11.6.B, 11.6.C, 11.6.D, 11.7.A, 11.8.A, 11.8.B, 11.9.A, 12.1.A, and 13.1.A.
Applicants who have successfully completed your course need not present completed “Task Control Sheets” for these assessments in application for STCW certification.
Objective:
The objective of this Advanced Cargo Handling & Stowage (Management Level) course is to provide students with a review of cargo handling and stowage practices at the management level and in doing so, satisfy company, national, and international regulations for candidates for certification as master or chief mate as follows:
STCW Code Section A-II/2 and Table A-II/2 for Function: Cargo handling and stowage at the management level
Competence:
Plan and ensure safe loading, stowage, securing, and care during the voyage and unloading of cargoes
Knowledge, understanding, and proficiency
- Knowledge of and ability to apply relevant international regulations, codes, and standards concerning the safe handling, stowage, securing, and transport of cargoes.
- Knowledge of the effect on trim and stability of cargoes and cargo operations.
- Stowage and securing of cargoes on board ships, including cargo-handling gear, securing, and lashing equipment.
- Loading and unloading operations, with special regard to the transport of cargoes identified in the Code of Safe Practice for Cargo Stowage and Securing
- General knowledge of tankers and tanker operations.
- Knowledge of the operational and design limitations of bulk carriers.
- Ability to use all available shipboard data related to loading, care and unloading of bulk cargoes.
- Ability to establish procedures for safe cargo handling in accordance with the provisions of the relevant instruments such as IMDG Code, IMSBC Code, MARPOL 73/78 Annexes III and V and other relevant information.
- Ability to explain the basic principles for establishing effective communications and improving working relationship between ship and terminal personnel.
Competence:
Assess reported defects, damage to cargo spaces, hatch covers, and ballast tanks, and take appropriate action
Knowledge, understanding, and proficiency:
Knowledge of the limitations on strength of the vital constructional parts of a standard bulk carrier and ability to interpret given figures for bending moments and shear forces.
Ability to explain how to avoid the detrimental effects on bulk carriers of corrosion, fatigue, and inadequate cargo handling.
Competence:
Carriage of dangerous goods
Knowledge, understanding, and proficiency:
- International regulations, standards, codes, and recommendations on the carriage of dangerous cargoes, including the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code and the International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes (IMSBC) Code.
- Carriage of dangerous, hazardous and harmful cargoes; precautions during loading and unloading and care during the voyage.
