Description
We recommend that students know the Morse Code prior to arrival.
The course will provide time to polish up reading capabilities with practice sessions that will enable the student to become familiar with MAMA equipment used in the test, and to gain an appreciation for the tempo of the testing as well as the recording requirements.
Any applicant who has successfully completed this Visual Communications (Flashing Light) (MIDATL-542) course will satisfy the Visual Signaling requirements of 46 CFR 11.309(a)(4)(vi) and 11.319(a)(4)(vi) if the course completion certificate is presented within 5 years of the completion of training; AND will be considered to have successfully demonstrated the equivalent of Tasks 7.1.A, 8.1 and 8.2 (Ch 1) for an STCW, as amended 2010, endorsement as Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch. Applicants who have successfully completed this course need not present a completed assessment sheet for these assessments in application for STCW certification.
This course aims to meet the mandatory minimum requirements for knowledge, understanding and proficiency in Table A-II/1 as amended for the function Visual signaling and English language at the Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch on vessels of 500 or more gross tonnage. This course will meet the requirements for Table A-II/1 Specification of minimum standard of competence for officers in charge of a navigational watch on ships of 500 gross tonnage or more:
Function: Navigation at the operational level
Competence: Use the IMO Standard Marine Communication Phrases and use English in written and oral form
Knowledge, Understanding, and Proficiency
English language
Adequate knowledge of English language… including ability to use and understand IMO Standard Marine Communication Phrases (SMCP)
Competence: Transmit and receive information by visual signaling
Knowledge, Understanding, and Proficiency
Visual signaling
Ability to use the International Code of Signals
Ability to transmit and receive by Morse light
