ALDESTA Heron Island Resort is seeking a Permanent Master IV <35/45m to join our operation in Gladstone, Queensland, on the Heron Islander.
This position requires motivation, enthusiasm and the flexibility to meet operational demands.
The Master works on a rotating roster of 2 weeks on/1 week off, with Tuesdays being for maintenance, and Thursday almost always being a day off.
As a member of our professional team, you will assist in the daily operation of our vessel travelling between Gladstone and Heron Island. The Heron Islander transports resort guests, researchers, staff and freight to and from Heron Island and has a capacity for 190 passengers. As Master, you will be responsible for the efficient operation of the Heron Islander, whilst always maintaining excellence in safety, leadership, customer service, punctuality and reliability.
The primary function of the role is the safe and secure operation and navigation of the vessel between Gladstone and Heron Island and to ensure safety and comfort of all passengers and crew on board. Your role will include implementing, monitoring and addressing crew and passengers' adherence to vessel safety procedures, along with conducting regular safety drills with crew, ensuring thorough induction and training of all employees, and implementing emergency procedures as required. You will also maintain compliance with all relevant laws, company policies and procedures, and verification of the vessel’s Safety Management System.
If you have a proven track record as a dedicated strong leader, with a high standard of interpersonal and organizational skills, have superior communication skills and proven safe ship handling experience this role is for you.
The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate experience working within fast-paced, professional, dynamic teams; have exceptional vessel-handling ability, knowledge and compliance of legislation and operating procedures, customer service, and a safety focused approach.

Qualifications and Experience
- AMSA recognized Master < 35/45m (Certificate of Competency) – Essential
- Experience with maintenance scheduling
- Demonstrated Leadership skills - Essential
- Senior First Aid and CPR - Essential
- Driver’s License - Essential
- Excellent communication skills
- Previous experience in marine tourism with high-speed ferry experience - highly regarded
- Dual qualified with MED1 highly regarded
This position is based at the Gladstone Marina.
You will need to provide evidence of your right to work in Australia and National Criminal Record check.
Work Experience Requirements:
All applicants must have previous experience in working on a Yacht or a Cruise Ship.
Language Requirements:
Good knowledge of the English language is required.
Certificates and Qualifications:
All applicants must hold a valid ENG1 certificate to be able to apply for this position.
A valid STCW Basic Safety Training certificate is required from all applicants. Please sign up for an STCW course and obtain the certificate if you don't have it yet.
